Apple is reportedly planning a significant shift in its operating system naming convention. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company may transition from sequential version numbers to year-based identifiers across all its platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. For instance, instead of releasing iOS 19, Apple might introduce iOS 26, aligning the version number with the release year.
This change aims to standardize versioning across Apple’s ecosystem, addressing current inconsistencies due to different launch times of each platform. The official announcement is expected at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, 2025.
In addition to the naming overhaul, Apple is preparing a substantial redesign of its operating systems. The upcoming updates—codenamed “Luck” for iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, and “Cheer” for macOS 16—will incorporate design elements from visionOS, the software powering the Vision Pro headset. Users can expect revamped icons, menus, applications, windows, and system buttons, aiming for a more unified and consistent user experience across devices.
These updates are anticipated to be the most significant since iOS 7 in 2013 and macOS Big Sur in 2020, reflecting Apple’s broader strategy to streamline its software ecosystem and deliver a cohesive visual language across its product lineup.
